Atlanta Officers Involved in Rayshard Brooks’ Death Surrender Themselves

The two Atlanta officers charged in the death of Rayshard Brooks both surrendered themselves yesterday afternoon. Former Officer Garrett Rolfe faces 11 counts including felony murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Rolfe is the officer who pulled the trigger last Friday, shooting Brooks in the back twice and killing him at a Wendy’s drive-thru. He faces the death penalty or life in prison if found guilty of the felony murder charge. Officer Devin Brosnan, who has not been fired, is charged with aggravated assault and three counts of violating his oath of office. Brosnan was quickly released on bond, something that Rolfe was denied. It’s been reported since the charges were announced, an unusually high number of Atlanta officers have called out sick for the late night shift two days in a row. It’s also been reported officers were not responding to calls in three of the department’s six zones. It’s also believed some officers refuse to leave their precincts unless a fellow officer requires backup.
