Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben’s, More Logos to be Retired Due to Racist Origins
As protests across the nation enter their third straight week, several companies are retiring some of their most controversial logos. It all began yesterday with Quaker Oats announcing the retirement of the Aunt Jemima brand after more than 130 years. It’s believed the origin of the popular breakfast brand was conceived during a minstrel show where white performers usually wore blackface. It’s believed during the show, slaves sung a song called “Aunt Jemima”. The company said they’ve made strides to evolve the logo over time to make it less offensive. However, in light of recent events, they’ve decided to retire it altogether. Following suit were the announcements that
the companies Mars and Conagra will also change the brand identities of the Uncle Ben and Mrs. Buttersworth logos. The exact changes to be made are still unclear, but both companies have said now is the right time to begin the steps to dissolve the logos tied to racist histories.
