President Trump Signs Executive Order on Police Reform
Yesterday, President Trump signed a new executive order on police reform. The order will establish a national federal database that will keep record of any officer’s history of excessive force. The president said he made the decision in order to hold police forces to the “highest and the strongest” professional standards” in order “to deliver a future of safety and security for Americans of every race, religion, color and creed.” However, he did not directly address the issue of racism in America and said that only a small percentage of officers were guilty of killing unarmed black people. He added “without police, there is chaos.” While it’s a major step forward, the latest executive order is still very vague. The president has left the more serious details to be hashed out between Democrats and Republicans who are both crafting their own police reform bills right now and don’t appear to have come to any bipartisan agreement yet. Republicans introduced their legislation this morning and hope to vote on it next week.
