Demands Made for Removal of John C. Calhoun Statue in Charleston
The John C. Calhoun statue in Charleston may be removed due to its controversial nature. Civil rights groups have demanded the statue owned by the city be removed since Calhoun, the seventh vice president of the United States, was an open supporter of slavery. A petition in favor of removing the monument had garnered nearly 19,000 signatures as of last night. It’s believed a decision could be made by Charleston council members as early as today. There have also been demands to rename Calhoun Street.
