SCOTUS Rules LGBTQ+ People Protected Against Job Discrimination
The Supreme Court ruled yesterday that LGBTQ+ workers are protected against job discrimination. The major decision was made in a 6 to 3 verdict as a result of three cases brought to their court. In all situations, employers admitted they fired workers for being either gay or transgender. Now SCOTUS has declared a person cannot be discriminated against for their sexual orientation or gender identity as it is a violation under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. This act already protects people from similar discrimination based on their sex, race, religion or national origin. This came as a major win for the LGBTQ+ community. Especially since conservative justices such as Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh were among those to rule in favor of the verdict. Both were appointed by President Trump who just announced last Friday his administration wanted to reverse an Obama-era ruling in order to allow health care professionals to refuse treatment to gay or transgender people.
