COVID-19 Cases, Deaths Continue to Increase in at Least 22 States
Over the weekend the U.S. coronavirus death toll surpassed 115,000 as states are experiencing a surge in cases. In New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo threatened to shut down Manhattan all over again just two weeks after beginning to reopen. His outrage stemmed from images and videos captured of large crowds not social distancing, or even wearing masks, since the reopening. He accused local law enforcement of not doing enough to maintain health safety guidelines and threatened to come down on them if they continued to do so. At least 22 states, mostly along the sunbelt, are seeing a surge in cases as a result of reopening too quickly with not enough restrictions and health guidelines being ignored. At least 18 states have recorded record or near-record highs since Saturday. Sixteen states are currently seeing an increase in cases by at least 25%. Texas in particular saw over 2,200 people hospitalized this weekend.
