Trump Administration Introduces New Immigration Legislation
The Trump Administration is drafting new legislation to make it harder for migrants to claim asylum in the U.S. It details several new changes such as greater scrutiny for those who traveled through more than one country to get to the U.S but did not seek refuge there. The new regulation also states if those filing for asylum have any sort of criminal record, whether it was expunged, reversed, or dropped, could impact their claim. The 161-page rule is set to be published on June 15th in the Federal Register. This is not the first major rule change the Trump Administration has enacted over the last four years, or even within the last few months. They appeared to seize on the opportunity the pandemic presented in order to propose even more restrictions. Earlier this week, the American Civil Liberties Union and two other immigrant advocacy organizations filed lawsuits against those strict coronavirus-related border reforms.
