President Trump Promises to Restore Law, Order in Rose Garden Speech

Yesterday, a week after the death of George Floyd, President Trump addressed the nation. He declared himself to be the “president of law and order” and said he is on the side of the peaceful protesters. As you just saw there, he was referring to the 1807 Insurrection Act as he implored governors to deploy their full militaries, saying if they don’t he will do it for them. While he spoke, flash bombs could be heard going off across the street as peaceful protesters were pushed back away from Lafayette park. Following this speech, he walked across the street to the St. Johns Espicol Church to hold up a bible for a photo op. Many were enraged by this, including Bishop Marianne Edgar Budde who oversees the church. She said, “The president did not pray when he came to St. John’s, nor…did he acknowledge the agony of our country right now.” She added he also did not have permission to hold that bible. But, there are those who disagree and have marked the moment as a historic display of strength and order.
