Protests Erupt in Minneapolis After Black Man Dies in Police Custody
Hundreds gathered in Minneapolis last night to protest the death of a black man while in police custody. Monday evening, four officers responded to an alleged forgery in progress where the suspect appeared to be under the influence. They reported 46-year-old George Floyd “physically resisted arrest”. He was handcuffed and pinned face down by an officer who pressed his knee into his neck for nine minutes. Video of the incident shows Floyd repeatedly told the officer he couldn’t breathe before he became unconscious. Floyd died shortly after at a hospital. The four officers involved have since been fired. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey offered his condolences and said the technique the officer used was against department regulations. The FBI is also investigating the matter. However, many believe this is still not enough. Protesters yesterday demanded more legal action be taken against the officers, including charging them with murder. They marched from the intersection where Floyd died before moving onto a police precinct. Law enforcement dressed in riot gear dispersed the crowds with tear gas once they started to become “unruly”.
