Michigan Governor Says Dam Failure Dangers Still Not Over
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is warning the flooding danger from the failed dams may not be over yet. She issued a state of emergency for at least one county after heavy rains and flash flooding led two dams to fail. In less than 24 hours, record numbers were reported as rivers, runoffs and crest levels hit some of the most extreme highs. About 11,000 people were asked to evacuate and the governor is now escalating her warning, saying “If you have not evacuated the area, do so now. This is unlike anything we’ve seen in midland county.” No injuries or fatalities have been reported yet. It was revealed yesterday that federal regulators have been warning of potential dam failure for 20 years. Companies near the Edenville dam were warned multiple times they would not be able to withstand a massive flood. However, due to lack of authority and adequate planning the issue was never truly addressed.
