Supreme Court Hears Both Sides in President Trump’s Immunity Case

Yesterday’s Supreme Court hearing regarding presidential immunity concluded without a clear ruling. Prior to taking office, President Trump was issued several subpoenas for his banking information and tax returns as part of an investigation into possible money laundering or other related crimes. President Trump’s attorneys argued that a sitting president should have full immunity. They claimed Congress has little power when it comes to investigating the president. They further argued the House Committee’s intentions were purely politically motivated. In the lower courts, the president’s case to receive immunity from the subpoenas was denied which is why the case was presented before the Supreme Court. The ruling on this case could have serious, long lasting impacts for future president’s and the parameters for separations of power.
