Experienced California Surfer Killed in Shark Attack

A surfer was killed after he was attacked by shark Saturday afternoon. 26-year-old Ben Kelly, a seasoned surfer who also sold customized surfboards for a living, was surfing near Manresa State Beach in Northern California around 1:30 in the afternoon when he was attacked. The incident happened about 100 yards offshore. At the time the area was closed to visitors over the pandemic, however surfers and swimmers were allowed. A witness flagged down a lifeguard patrolling the area but unfortunately, Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene. At this time the species of shark remains unknown, however a local photographer reported seeing upwards of 15 great white sharks around the area in recent days. Following protocol, one mile north and south of the location of the incident will be closed for five days. The beach will reopen Thursday and will have warning signs posted.
