New Title IX Regulations Protect Those Accused of Sexual Assault

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos finalized a new Title IX resolution yesterday afternoon. Those accused of sexual assault and harassment on college campuses will now be granted new protections. They’ll have the ability to question evidence and both parties will be required to undergo cross-examination in live hearings. The new ruling also narrows the definition of sexual misconduct on campuses. DeVos said she approved the resolution in order to bring fairness and balance to both parties. The new ruling has been extremely controversial especially amongst victim advocacy groups. They argue the new regulations will only further discourage survivors from reporting their assaults and is a direct violation of their civil rights. Many others are also critical over DeVos’ decision to implement these new regulations given the current global health crisis.
