Congress Returns to Capital Hill Today

The Senate has returned to Washington today after the pandemic forced them to close in late March. This most recent closure was longer than that during the 1918 Spanish Flu or even 9/11. While there is fear of exposure to members of congress as well as the cooks, cleaners, police officers and other workers who keep Capital Hill running, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said they can no longer “sit on the sidelines”. Their roles in the U.S. are just as essential as grocery clerks, truck drivers and more. The first order of business today is discussing the virus and how best to overcome it, but there are no immediate plans to get back to work rolling out the next relief bill. They’ve already passed multiple unprecedented relief packages worth trillions of dollars and now plan to wait and see how well states who are gradually reopening are able to support themselves.
