Meat Supply May be Impacted as Major Plants Temporarily Close
With meat processing plants temporarily closing across the county, the U.S. food chain supply may be largely impacted. One of those major meat plants is that of Tyson’s in Iowa and Indiana who were forced to close following an outbreak of coronavirus in their facilities. The two plants from this one company alone employs nearly 100,000 people. Additionally, two other major plants and several smaller ones have also suspended production. They will only be allowed to return to work following a deep clean of their factories and all employees have been tested. All together, these plants “account for 15% of pork production.” Furthermore, facilities in Delaware and Maryland have announced they will have to euthanize two million chickens to account for the decrease in production. Tyson has warned that millions of pounds of meat disappearing from the supply could be the start of the food chain breaking.
