President Trump Threatened to Use Unprecedented Authority

President Trump threatened to invoke a never before used constitutional authority yesterday. Now more than ever the president feels it is necessary to fill key positions within the government in order to help combat the pandemic. He believes because of partisan obstruction in congress, 129 of his nominees are still “stuck in the senate”. Therefore, he has threatened to use a power called “recess authority.” The clause grants him permission, in extraordinary circumstances, to appoint most of his nominees to those vacant positions while congress is adjourned and without their approval. Currently, congress is adjourned until May 4th. President Trump said yesterday, “I have a very strong power. I’d rather not use that power but we have way over a hundred people that we very badly need in this administration that should have been approved a long time ago.” This all comes just days after he claimed to have “total authority” over the country.
