Multiple States Release Hundreds of Prisoners
U.S. prisons are releasing hundreds of inmates due to the coronavirus. With about 2.3 million people currently imprisoned, the U.S. detains more citizens per capita than any other country. It’s been reported they are at a higher risk of contracting and passing on the virus due to close living quarters and, occasionally, lack of proper hygiene and sanitary conditions. Those being released include people arrested for minor crimes or those suffering from health conditions who are most at risk. States participating in the mass release include California, Ohio and New York.
And speaking of New York, in New York City, a prisoner and guard both tested positive at Rikers Island. This has prompted high profile inmate Harvey Weintstein to be moved to a completely different facility, especially since he is currently suffering from so many ailments. Multiple other high profile inmates, including Michael Cohen and Bernie Madoff are also asking for early release.
