Two Americans Killed on Iraq Military Base in Rocket Attacks

Two Americans and one British national were killed following a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base. More than fifteen small rockets hit the Taji base yesterday and injured an additional twelve people. An investigation into the incident is ongoing but a U.S. official has confirmed Iran is likely the culprit behind the attack. They have said there is strong reason to believe Iranian-backed fighters or Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corp were specifically responsible.
Over the last few weeks, there have been multiple similar attacks in Iraq, but yesterday’s was the first to cause a U.S. death since December. That last death is what prompted President Trump to order a retaliation strike which resulted in the death of Iran’s top military general, Qasem Solemani. In light of this tragedy, a defense official has suggested the U.S. intends to respond accordingly.
