Suicide Bombers Set Off Explosion Near U.S. Embassy in Tunisia
*STORY UPDATE: It’s been re-confirmed that one officer was killed with four others INJURED in the explosion this morning.*
Reports of an explosion near the U.S. Embassy in Tunis, Tunisia in Northern Africa were reported early this morning. It’s been confirmed by Tunisia’s Interior Ministry that two suicide bombers blew themselves up, killed five police officers, and injured one civilian in the attacks. Eyewitnesses claim the suspects were riding on a motorcycle near the embassy when they detonated their bombs, but this could not be immediately confirmed. Not much else is known at this time about the incident as phones at the embassy have gone mostly unanswered. We do know police have already begun to tape off the area as they begin their investigation. This is not the first instance of suicide bomber attacks in Tunisia. In recent years, Islamic extremists have killed dozens of people in multiple attacks across the country. Much of these incidences can be attributed to the political unrest surrounding the country, especially since the fall of their last dictatorship in early 2011.
