Fort Lauderdale Mayor Seeking Federal Aid for Massive Sewage Leak
A Fort Lauderdale mayor is seeking federal aid following a 211 million gallon toxic sewage leak. The leak is attributed to the city’s aged and failing pipe system. Over the last three months there have been nine separate breaks in the water main system. It’s reported the poisonous sewage is so bad it has killed off a lot of local marine animals like fish, crabs, oysters, barnacles and plankton. Crews were deployed to pick up hundreds of dead fish from the water. Residents were even advised to boil their faucet water before attempting to use it for anything including drinking, cooking, or even brushing their teeth for almost ten days. The pre-cautionary boiling notice has been lifted, however the problem is still at large. Mayor Dean Trantalis has said of the leak “considering the extent of this pollution, we should be more than eligible for state and federal assistance. We cannot suffer this burden alone.”
