Boy Scouts of America File for Bankruptcy Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

The Boy Scouts of America organization has officially filed for bankruptcy amid sexual abuse allegations. The youth organization just celebrated their 110th anniversary on February 8th but filed for Chapter 11 early this morning in Delaware. The decision stemmed from hundreds of sexual abuse lawsuits, over 12,000 alleged abuse victims and dwindling membership numbers they’d experienced over the last couple of years. On the bankruptcy documents it’s reported the liabilities listed are between 100 and $500 million, but $50,000 or less in assets. Unfortunately for a lot of victims, due to the filing all civil litigation against the organization has been suspended. Currently, about 120 child sexual abuse cases are being re-directed to law enforcement in attempt to narrow down particular perpetrators of the abuse. But a silver lining to all this is that these allegations have led lawmakers in about 40 states to extend statutes of limitations.
