“Million Man March” Protests U.S. Troops in Iraq

Hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets today in Baghdad to protest the presence of u.s. troops in Iraq. The protest has been deemed “the Million Man March” by Shia Cleric Muqtada al-Sadr who called for citizens to attend. Families and children held Iraqi flags and signs condemning the U.S. as they marched the Green Zone. The Green Zone is an area in Iraq that has been the site of multiple increased rocket attacks especially since the U.S. killed Iran’s top military general, Qassem Soleimani. The Green Zone also happens to house the U.S. embassy.
There’s no reports of the march becoming violent but they were surrounded by a heavy military presence as they protested. There are about 5,000 U.S. troops currently in Iraq. And it seems despite Iraqi efforts, including their parliament voting to expel the U.S military from the country, the U.S. has no plans to pull its troops.
