Escaped Inmate Back in Custody After 40 Years

A man was finally captured in Delaware after he’d escaped a South Carolina prison more than 40 years ago. 64-year-old Jose Romero escaped from a corrections work crew in 1979 and hadn’t been seen since. Then, just a few days ago, his identity was discovered after he was arrested for a separate crime. At first, he gave Dover police a fake ID with his assumed name. But it wasn’t long before fingerprinting revealed who he really was. Romero was arrested shortly after again. He is currently being held in a prison in Delaware on a fugitive warrant. He was also charged with public intoxication, loitering, trespassing, forgery, criminal impersonation and being an out-of-state fugitive. He has chosen to waive extradition and his lawyers have denied comment.
