New Zealand Volcano Death Toll Rises
The number of victims in the sudden volcano eruption yesterday has risen from five to six with the remaining missing presumed to be dead. Every burn unit in the country of New Zealand is overcapacity as they tend to and treat the 31 survivors. They are reported to have suffered severe burns and damage to their lungs. Twenty-seven of them have burns to at least 30% of their bodies and its possible that not all of them will survive. American newly weds, Matt and Lauren Urey, were on their honeymoon when the volcano erupted. Both suffered severe injuries and were airlifted to different hospitals for surgery. Survivors range in ages from 13 to 72.
Authorities are still working on gathering information about the eruption. They are also continuing efforts in the search for the eight people still missing, but they are not hopeful. The big question everyone is now asking is why were people allowed on the island if there were warning signs of an eruption prior to this tragedy?
