Tar Heel Teachers Protest
Teachers in North Carolina are the next group of educators to hold a massive protest.
After teacher protests across the country, thousands of educators descended upon North Carolina state capital for the “March for Students and Rally for Respect,” using every form of communication to make sure their voices are heard. Many states cut school funding after the 2008 recession, and it has taken years to restore funding. This week North Carolina lawmakers say they have reached a spending agreement, making it the 5th year in a row that legislators have increased teachers pay. But it’s still below the national average of $59,000 a year, averaging a little over $49,000. Republican leaders say they have already made progress during the beginning of this session by making agreements on taxes and pay raises, but say there are still things that need to be worked on.
