Deadly Deliveries

A manhunt is underway in Austin for a suspect who is sending out packages that explode when opened.

Three packages have exploded in ten days in Austin, TX, killing a teenager and a 39-year-old man. Other people nearby were injured, some seriously. In each case, the plain-looking box sits outside the victim’s house overnight and then goes off when opened. It wasn’t until the two latest explosions, on Monday, that police began investigating a connection. None of the three was delivered through a mail service. But aside from the recipients minority status, there doesn’t appear to be a common thread. Police say the devices are sophisticated. The FBI and the ATF have joined the investigation. This week is Austin’s South by Southwest festival. Police do not think any attendees are at risk, but are still urging people to be extra cautious.
