Setting the Stage

President Trump will give his first State of the Union address tonight.

The State of the Union address is one of the most conventional functions of the modern White House- the President outlining his goals for the coming year. And while President Trump has addressed Congress before, this is his first full-on State of the Union address. The White House says the President spent part of the day yesterday rehearsing. He’s expected to celebrate the explosive growth of the markets in recent months, encouraging unemployment numbers, and, of course, tax cuts. Whether the President bring up the Russia investigation or yesterday’s departure of FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe remains up in the air. Areas of possible bipartisan cooperation, like infrastructure spending and immigration, should also be mentioned. The Democratic response will fall to a relatively young but rising Massachusetts Congressman, Joe Kennedy.
