Shrimp Fisheries Close, Affects on Seafood Stores and Restaurants

Due to the cold temperatures that swept the south this winter, you might not be seeing shrimp in local restaurants. Federal and State waters off Georgia and South Carolina have been closed to fishing for shrimp. Customers at grocery stores and restaurants won’t see any immediate effects, that could change though, come springtime. South Carolina’s shrimping season usually reopens in April or May, but in recent years it’s been pushed back. Shrimp are sensitive to unusually cold temps, since early January, the Department of Natural Resources and members of the public have reported seeing dead shrimp along shorelines across South Carolina.
