At least three people are confirmed dead and more than 50 are injured in a deadly train derailment in Washington state.
Several people were killed and dozens injured -many seriously- when Amtrak train number 501 went off the tracks. The Monday morning derailment set off a chain reaction, pushing more than twelve train cars and an engine off the overpass, many falling onto busy Interstate-5 right below the tracks. Five crew members and eighty passengers were on board, much less than maximum capacity on this train’s inaugural run. The data recorder on the train shows it was doing eighty miles-an-hour around a curve, more than double the limit. Authorities says the technology that automatically slows a speeding train – called ‘positive train control’ – was not in use on that section of the track.
