Man shot dead by S.C. deputies in hurricane evacuation dispute
BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WFXB) – Police say deputies shot and killed a man after he fired on them following a chase in South Carolina.
The incident reportedly started as authorities were re-directing vehicles during evacuations for Hurricane Matthew. Berkeley County Chief Deputy, Mike Cochran, says 35-year-old Lucas M. Felkel of Moncks Corner got out of his truck, moved a traffic cone and then sped away.
Deputies chased the man until he stopped on a dead-end road, where got out of his truck and opened fire. Police returned fire and struck the man. He was hospitalized and died shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday. Officials say four deputies involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating. The coroner says an autopsy is scheduled.
