Library Black History Month Program
The Doctor’s Bruce and Lee Foundation Library will host An Historical Overview of the Black Experience in South Carolina: Slavery, Jim Crow, and the Struggle for Freedom and Civil Rights on February 19, at 6:30 p. m. in the Joseph Stukes Meeting Room. Three distinguished speakers will bring perspectives from three different eras. Scholar Dr. Daniel C. Littlefield of the University of South Carolina will address slavery during the colonial period. Dr. Louis Venters of Francis Marion University will speak about the Jim Crow system and the nature of black activism in the early 20th Century. Dr. John Gaines will recount his personal experience as part of the “Friendship Nine” who refused to give up their seats at a lunch counter in Rock Hill, South Carolina in 1961. Admission is free and open to the public.
