Jon Beason Is A New York Giant

CHARLOTTE, NC- Jon Beason is a New York Giant.

The Panthers traded the three-time pro-bowler, record-setter, and former team captain Friday.

In exchange for Beason, the Panthers get a late-round draft pick.

The veteran linebacker has had trouble staying healthy, and only played five games over the past two seasons.

“I wish him nothing but the best, but he’s lost about five and a half steps, let’s be honest!” said Marc James, co-host of WFNZ’s “The Drive”.

The first round draft pick out of Miami and five-time team captain became the first rookie in Panther history to lead the team in tackles. He’s only played fives since suffering a torn Achilles in 2011 and knee and shoulder injuries in 2012.

“Luke Kuechly has replaced him in terms of production, but in terms of a leader, it remains to be seen whether that’s Kuechly or Cam Newton to step up, because Jon Beason is still the leader in that locker room,” said James.

Fans are calling the seven-year veteran a “class act” on and off the field whom they will miss.

“That’s a guy who’s not just a football player, but he’s an impact person in Charlotte, so you just can’t replace that,” said Eric Streeter, a Matthews resident.

Many are calling the trade a good thing for Beason and a great thing for the panthers.

“I want to see us get into the playoffs and get to the Super Bowl, and whatever we need to do to get there, even if it involves trades, I just want to see us win!” said Phil Roger, an East Charlotte resident.

The Panthers still have to pay Beason $8 million of his current contract. That cuts down the money that could be used to acquire other players.
