Auburn coach: Newton, Manziel share rarefied air
Auburn coach Gus Malzahn puts quarterbacks Cam Newton and Johnny Manziel in the same elite category. Malzahn calls his former pupil, Newton, and No. 7 Texas A&M’s star Manziel “probably two of the best that ever played the game in college football.” Malzahn’s 24th-ranked Tigers will try to contain Manziel on Saturday. The Auburn coach was Newton’s offensive coordinator during the team’s 2010 national championship season. Both Newton and Manziel won the Heisman Trophy with swashbuckling styles and the ability to abuse defenses running and passing. Newton, now with the Carolina Panthers, says Manziel “is a great football player and he’s playing at a level that people don’t even really see.” Manziel broke Newton’s SEC record for total offense last season.
