Donald H. Marshall Sr., 79, died at his home in Pinehurst, Saturday, July 9, 2011. Mr. Marshall is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joan Disler Marshall, and three sons, Donald Jr. (Hank) of Phoenix, Arizona, Bill of Sagamore Hills, Ohio, and Mike of Tipp City, Ohio, plus six grand children—Brian, Bradley, Craig, Scott, Kara and Sarah—-and his three daughters in law, Ann, Mariann and Lisa. As Director of International Operations and Licensing for B.F. Goodrich Chemical, Mr. Marshall worked on four continents and seven countries while he and his wife raised their three boys around the world. Only one of them, Hank, was born in the United States while Bill was born in Melbourne, Australia, and Mike was born in San Paulo, Brazil. In addition, Mr. Marshall‘s job with Goodrich took him and his family to New Zealand, Holland, Venezuela and the United States. He also served in Mexico for Goodrich. Mr. Marshall was born, December 12, 1931, in Orange, New Jersey, and lettered in three sports at Verona, N.J., High School. He then attended Princeton University where he earned his bachelors degree in chemical engineering, graduating in 1953. A 6-foot 4-inch, strong athlete, Mr. Marshall was an end on the Princeton football team under Coach Charlie Caldwell, the last man to coach a major college team using the single wing attack. Mr. Marshall was also a forward on the Princeton basketball team of 1951—1952 under Coach Frank Cappon. That team became the first of 26 Princeton basketball teams to reach the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Championship tournament. Following Graduation, Mr. Marshall served two years in the Army with the U.S. Army Security Agency at Fort Devon, Massachusetts, before going to work for B. F. Goodrich International. Mr. Marshall and his wife were living in Brecksville, Ohio, when he retired and they moved to Pinehurst in 1992. Mr. Marshall was a volunteer at First Health Moore Regional Hospital, working in the radiation department and emergency room for the last 18 years. He also read for the blind, voice recording The Pilot for local blind readers of the newspaper. A member of the Pinehurst Country Club, Mr. Marshall was Men‘s Golf Association treasurer for 4 years, and president of the PCC Tennis Association for 2 years. Visitation will be at Boles Funeral Home in Pinehurst, Thursday, July 14, 6 – 8 PM. A memorial funeral mass will be in St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Southern Pines, Friday, July 15 at 10 AM.
