Dixon, Richard Jobie
Richard Jobie Dixon, resident of DeBordieu Colony, Georgetown, SC, passed away Sunday, July 3, at the Medical University of SC, Charleston after a long, heroic battle against lung cancer. He was 67. Dixon was born and raised in Sumter, SC. A 1961 graduate of Edmunds High School, he was elected president and friendliest member of the senior class. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1965 and served as president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Dixon was hired in 1966 by Procter & Gamble as a junior marketing executive. Doyle Dane Bernbach, one of New York‘s top Madison Avenue advertising agencies, recognized Dixon‘s creativity and hired him in 1969. Dixon moved to Atlanta in 1973 and joined best friends Jim and Jan Pringle to create Pringle Dixon Pringle, which throughout the 70s and 80s was one of the south‘s most renowned advertising agencies. During the last two decades, Dixon worked as marketing director of Long John Silver‘s and later with California‘s In and Out Burger franchise. He settled in Georgetown, SC in 1998, working as a marketing consultant, eventually writing a book about creative thinking titled “Innovate, Leap Out of the Bowl,” and hosting an online radio talk show of the same name. Jobie Dixon is survived by his children Christopher Jobie Dixon, Charleston, SC, Watts Stroman Dixon, Greensboro, NC and Jean Louise Dixon, Potsdam, Germany. Grandchildren include Miles Alan Dixon, Lucy Victoria Dixon and Frederick Charles Dixon. One brother, Dr. Robert L. Dixon, Winston-Salem, NC, and one sister Linda Hayes, Sumter, SC. He is predeceased by his loving wife Celeste Williams Cortez Dixon, a native of Jamaica, and parents Leland Witherspoon Dixon and Louise Bateman Dixon, both of Sumter, SC. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 9th, St. Mary‘s Catholic Church, 317 Broad Street Georgetown, SC, directed by the Georgetown Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home (843) 546-0198.
