Holloway, Wanda

Wanda June Holloway, 82, of Hartsville, SC, completed her earthly walk on May 30, 2011. Mrs. Holloway was born on April 19, 1929, in Cartersville, SC, the eldest child of the late Eric Evander Rogers and the late Frances Pearce Rogers. Mrs. Holloway moved to Philadelphia, PA, at an early age. It was there that she met the love of her life, Frank Holloway. Mr. and Mrs. Holloway were married on February 12, 1949, and began a long life together. As Mr. Holloway steadily advanced in his career, Mrs. Holloway made a beautiful home for him and their only child, Carole. They moved many times over the years and with each move, Mrs. Holloway created yet another lovely refuge for her husband and daughter. Mrs. Holloway was a wonderful cook, preparing most dishes from scratch with great attention to detail. There are many wonderful taste memories, but three are noteworthy for her family: sweet tea always made with loose tea leaves and lemon; pimiento cheese made with only three pure ingredients; and ambrosia made with carefully selected fresh fruit. Upon moving to Hartsville in 1991, Mrs. Holloway could often be found in her yard tending to her flowers and bushes. As people drove past her home, they would frequently see a small figure in a floppy hat engaging in a variety of garden chores. Mrs. Holloway loved flowers of all kinds, but daylilies and irises were particular favorites. Mrs. Holloway would tell you in a minute, however, that her most beautiful flower was her granddaughter, Nicole. Until failing health made attendance impossible, Mrs. Holloway never missed any of Nicole‘s activities or performances. Mrs. Holloway was predeceased by her husband. Shortly before his death, they were blessed to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on February 12, 2009. Mrs. Holloway is survived by her daughter, W. Carole Holloway, and son-in-law, Mal Hyman, and her beloved granddaughter, Nicole Holloway Hyman. She is also survived by: her brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Lillian Rogers, of Bishopville; her sister and brother-in-law, Hester and David Bottonfield, of Hartsville; her sister, Mary Frances Smith, and her brother, James Lee Rogers, both of Hartsville. Also remaining to cherish her memory is her sister-in-law, Virginia C. Holloway, of Pennsauken, NJ. Numerous nephews and nieces survive. Mrs. Holloway was predeceased by her brother, Billy Rogers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer‘s Association or Kalmia Gardens of Coker College. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 6, 2011 at St. Luke United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service. The Rev. Phil Thrailkill will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family.
