Stokes, Darryl

Darryl M. Stokes, 67, of Myrtle Beach and formerly of Darlington died suddenly on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. Mr. Stokes was born in Darlington, South Carolina, a son of the late Johnny A. Stokes, Sr. and Dolly P. Stokes. He was retired from sales. He was one of the original members of the Swinging Travelers, a rhythm and blues band. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Johnny, Jr. and his sister, Lexie Margaret Collie. Darryl leaves behind his former wife of 25 years Jane of Myrtle Beach, SC; his son, Darren of Clearwater, Fla.; his brothers, Tommy (Gwen) of Darlington, Pete (Ellen) of Columbia, and Dennis (Debra) of Columbia; along with many nieces and nephews. Darryl loved the Lord. He always had a joke and a smile for everyone and he never met a stranger. He always made people laugh whenever he was in a crowd. Darryl loved his former wife, Jane, his beloved Gamecocks, golf, and Shagging. He was the founder of the South Strand Shag Club and attended the University of South Carolina. The family suggest that those who wish, may make donations to the American Heart Association or to the Heroes for Children Foundation, which helps abused and neglected children (1320 Hwy 501 Unite H, Conway, South Carolina 29526). We will have a celebration of Darryl’s life on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Surfside Presbyterian Church (8732 Highway 17 Bypass, Myrtle Beach, SC 29588).
