Fifield, Andree

Andree B. Fifield, age 89 of Pinehurst died on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. She was born on May 14, 1922 in Manhattan, NY to the late Herbert Wetzler and Helen Sircoulomb Wetzler. She attended Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, but graduated from a high school in Sayville, Long Island, in 1940. She went on to attend Bryant College, a two-year business school in Providence, Rhode Island, where she met her future husband. She later moved to Chicago and worked for the government at the Salary Stabilization Unit. On March 13, 1943, Mrs.Fifield enlisted in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). She was a WWII veteran of her country and served in the United States Navy. She was in one of the first classes assigned to basic training at Cedar Falls, Iowa. After basic training, she briefly worked in the National Archives (NARA) while waiting for security clearance to become a secretary in the Office of Naval Intelligence. She went on to work for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon Building and briefly for the Office of the President. She lived in an apartment next to the White House with six other girls. Mrs.Fifield met her husband, Donald, and enlisted into the Navy with him, they were married in 1945.She was discharged from the WAVES in October 1945. After the war, they lived in Chicago, then moved to Boston in 1948 and then to Albany, NY in 1955. Three years later, the Fifields moved to Skaneateles, NY, where they remained for twenty-two years. During this time she worked as a interior decorator for Sears Roebuck and gave birth to two children. The Fifields went on to live in New Hampshire and retired to Pinehurst, NC where Mrs.Fifield was very involved with her community. She was currently an active volunteer with St.Joseph of the Pines Health Centers, and FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital Specialty Centers. She served on the Moore County Nursing Home Advisory Committee and was an avid golfer. Mrs. Fifield just recently was a recipient on the Flight of Honor to Washing, DC on May 4, 2011. She was one of one hundred veterans on this flight, of which ten were from Moore County, NC. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Donald I. Fifield of Pinehurst; a daughter, Donna Fifield of Oneida, NY; and Donald G. Fifield, Steamboat Springs, CO; and a granddaughter, Amy Doyle of Beverly Hills, CA. A Military Honors Service provided by the United States Navy will be held on Friday, May 20, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at Boles Funeral in Pinehurst with a Celebration of Life to follow at the funeral home.
