Morris, Walter

Walter Smith Morris, Sr., age 91 of Pinehurst, NC died on May 9, 2011 at The Inn at Quail Haven. A true Southern Gentleman, he was born in New Bern, NC on May 15, 1919 to the late Abbott and Margaret Morris. He married the late Hilda Thigpen Morris on September 5, 1939 and moved to Morehead City, NC where he operated his own jewelry store. He was a Master Watch Maker, a Certified Gemologist and Master Hand Engraver. He was on the City council and President of the Morehead City Jaycees. He was active in several civic clubs and participated in numerous local activities. He served in the Air Force during World War II. In 1980, he and his wife moved to Greenville, SC where he managed Cochran‘s Jewelry store. He and his wife moved to Pinehurst, in 2000, to be closer to family. He was a member of Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his son, Dr. Walter S. Morris, Jr., and his wife Carolyn of Pinehurst, and three grandchildren: Dr. Walter S. Morris III and his wife Cornelia and two great-grandchildren, Mary Mitchell and George, of Southern Pines; Thomas E. Morris and his wife Amy and three great-grandchildren, Lacy, John and Joe of Charlotte; Leigh Velevis and her husband Tom and a great-grandson, Ben of Southern Pines. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Pinelawn Memorial Park with Dr. Grady Perryman, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church, 330 S. May Street, Southern Pines, NC 28387
