Johnnie Roosevelt Driggers, Jr. 77, died Saturday, March 5. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Stone Fields Driggers; a son, Johnnie R. “Moe” Driggers, III of Laurinburg; five daughters, Mary Driggers, Hazel Smith, Lanette Norton, and Crystal Goff of Laurinburg, and Carla Sue Sperry of Florida; three step sons, Steven Wayne Fields and Jimmy Fields of Laurinburg, and Jeffery Stone Fields of Carthage; three step daughters, Debbie Easterling of Wilmington, Maxine Gardner of Laurel Hill, and Sandra English of Hamlet; two sisters, Maxine Bowyer and Shirley Hardy of Laurinburg; eight grandchildren, Johnnie Driggers, IV, Robert Driggers, Hannah Goff, Gabby Norton, Myles Norton, Ethan Norton, Lee Sperry, and Wade Sperry; two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marsha Papa Driggers. Born August 18, 1933 in Scotland County, he was a son of the late Johnnie R. and Lillie Ammons Driggers. Johnnie served with the US Army where he was stationed in Germany. Afterward he started auto body repair in Florida and later moved to Laurinburg where he was with City Autos. In 1981 he began Driggers Body Repair. Johnnie loved fishing at Santee, farming and gardening, and loved cooking with chicken bog, catfish stew, and grilling ribs as his favorites. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the East Laurinburg Church of God officiated by the Rev. Jeffery McGirt. Entombment will follow at Scotland Cemetery.
