Mr. Griggs died Sunday, February 27, 2011. Born in Chesterfield Co., SC, he was a son of the late Sam and Marie Winburn Griggs. He was a member of New Providence Baptist Church. He had a great love of fishing, wrestling, and he loved his children and grandchildren dearly. He was a giving man who never turned anyone away. Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, Winnie Lucille Griggs of Byrdtown, SC; sons and daughters-in-law, James Earl Griggs of Byrdtown, SC, Joseph Carroll and Dianne Griggs of McBee, SC & Byrdtown, SC, Bobby Joe and Margie Griggs of Cheraw, SC, Larry Eugene Griggs of Byrdtown, SC, Jerry Griggs of Byrdtown, SC; daughter and “granddaughter”, Candace “Candy” Griggs of Byrdtown, SC; grandchildren, Joseph Carroll “Joey” Griggs, Jr., Tabitha Griggs, Bobby Calhoun Griggs, Corey Griggs, Sammy Joe Griggs, Phillip Michael Griggs, Robert Faile; great-grandchildren, Lex Griggs, Cameron Little, and 4 other great-grandchildren; He was preceded in death by his daughter, Betty Lou Griggs, brother, David Griggs, Jimmy Griggs; stepsister, Jewell Griggs; grandchild, Randy Lee Griggs. Special friend of the family, “Fat Cat”; Special friend of the family and mother of Corey and Joey, Dana Kim Gainey. Funeral services for James Griggs, 77, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at New Providence Baptist Church. The Rev. Cliff Leonard and the Rev. Dale Broadway will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. The Griggs family will receive friends Tuesday, March 1, 2011 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the New Providence Baptist Church, 1884 Antioch Road, Hartsville, SC 29550.
