Shirley, Ernest

Mr. Ernest “Dick” Shirley of Laurinburg passed away on Friday, January 28, 2011 at the age of 93. Mr. Shirley was born June 27, 1917 in Kershaw County, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Wallace and Dannie Pate Shirley and the husband of the late Ruth Kelly Shirley. He served his country proudly in the United States Army. He worked in textiles, retiring as a supervisor from Springs Mills after many years of service. He served as a longtime member of the Huckabee Grove Emanuel Holiness Church. Ernest also enjoyed gardening and building dog houses. Mr. Shirley is survived by his sister, Mae Shirley Kennington of Camden, SC; step children, William “Jack” Wallace and wife Frances of Rockingham, Lee “Vivian” Baker Kossyk of Pinehurst; six step grandchildren, six step great grandchildren, four step great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by brothers, George Shirley, David K. Shirley, Foster Shirley; sisters, Selma Hinson, Annie Lee Munn, Ester Tennant and Ruth Galloway. Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 30, 2011 at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel officiated by Rev. Larry Singletary. Burial will follow at Scotland Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service on Sunday at Richard Boles Funeral Service. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Shirley to the charity of one‘s choice.
