McRae , Sarah Margaret

Sarah Margaret McRae, 81, died January 1, 2011 at Oakleaf Village in Lexington, SC. She is survived by a brother, Wilbur McRae (Lula) of Maxton; two sisters, Mary Alice Winecoff McGirt (Hal) of Columbia and Lois Thompson (Troy) of Bristol, TN; and 15 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilton McRae and Marshall McRae; a sister, Ruth Peterson; and a nephew, Wilbur McRae, Jr. Born May 12, 1929 in Maxton, she was a daughter of the late Marvin N. and Alice Deaton McRae. She received a degree in accounting from Presbyterian Junior College and was a bookkeeper for Maxton Supply Company for 45 years. Sarah was a very caring individual. She steadfastly devoted time and effort to the care of her mother for several years before her mother‘s death. She loved working. She loved animals – particularly dogs and cats. She accepted and cared for many strays with no concern for her own health and safety. Although she had not children, she thoroughly enjoyed and loved her nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to the excellent management and staff of Oakleaf Village of Lexington. Their compassion and dedicated care undoubtedly made the last year of sarah‘s life both comfortable and happy. Her participation in the Southern Belles (Handbell Choir) was a great enjoyment to her, and she enjoyed the outings provided by their recreation staff. A graveside service will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Oak Grove Cemetery officiated by the Rev. Robert Dendy. A visitation will follow in the fellowship hall of the First Presbyterian Church. Sarah stated prior to her death that in lieu of flowers the greatest memorial anyone could make to her life would be a donation to a no-kill animal shelter to preserve the life of one of God‘s creatures. The family hopes this request will be honored.
