Hulbert, Eleanor

Eleanor White Hulbert, age 102 of Sanford passed away on Monday, December 27, 2010 at Parkview Retirement Home in Sanford. Mrs. Hulbert would have been 103 on January 26. Mrs. Hulbert was born on January 26, 1908 in Effingham, Ill to the late Henry C. White and Ada Zimmerman White. She attended the University of North Carolina where she earned a masters degree in Elementary Education. She also attended the following colleges – U.N.C. at Greensboro, Iowa State College, and Appalachian College with a degree in Library Science. Eleanor taught 2 years in a one room schoolhouse in Illinois. She taught 7th and 8th grade math and science for 12 years in Old Sanford Junior High School. She was an elementary school librarian in Sanford for 8 years. She took turn for eight years with three other teachers in the Lucille Hunter Bible School Class at St. Luke UMC. She attended the Sanford Woman‘s Club for 50 years and held many offices in this organization. She was a volunteer worker at Carolina Hospital for 15 years. She had been living at Parkview Retirement Home since July 2001. She is survived by her son, William Henry Hulbert and his wife Sylvia Scoggins Hulbert of Columbia, SC; one brother, James Fred White of Hardensburg, Indiana; a sister-in-law Agnes White of Hoffman, Ill.; and 17 nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, John H. White and four sisters, Frances Harmon, Marie Appel, Regina Wilson and Anne Lee Ulrich. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 31, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Sanford. Visitation will be held in the church parlor immediately following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to: St. Luke United Methodist Church, 2916 Wicker St., Sanford, NC 27330.
