Etta McHaffey Cameron Richardson died on Monday, November 29, 2010, after a lengthy illness and a long, joyful life. She was 85 years old. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Eveleth Richardson. The family will receive visitors at Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines on Wednesday, December 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Manly Presbyterian Church on Thursday, December 2, at 11 a.m., with Dr. William W. Rolland officiating. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Mrs. Richardson was born on September 14, 1925, in Fayetteville, NC, to J. Bruce Cameron and Etta Jane McHaffey. She moved to the Manly community of Southern Pines when she was five years old, and continued to live in the family home for the rest of her life. Her home was the gathering place for the extended family and their friends and acquaintances at holidays and in times of celebration and grief. On learning of the death of her grandmother, one of Mrs. Richardson‘s granddaughters wrote: “Today she joined the Church Eternal. She lived out the biblical value of hospitality better than anyone I know, taking in the sick and the widowed, and welcoming any who came to eat with her, and now she has been welcomed, ‘no more a stranger or a guest, but like a child at home.‘” She had a career while raising five children and being active in service, especially to her church. She worked for many years at Pinehurst, Inc., and later for Pinehurst after it was purchased by Diamondhead Corporation. She also worked as legal secretary for the late Arthur Rowe, attorney, in Southern Pines. After her retirement, she worked part time for the accountant, Robert Barrett, in Pinehurst. Mrs. Richardson was a pillar of Manly Presbyterian Church. She served several terms as an Elder and as Clerk of the Session, served as church treasurer for many years, was active in Presbyterian Women, sang in the church choir, and composed and printed the worship bulletins until she was 80 years old. She is survived by a brother, Joseph B. Cameron (Mildred) of Castle Hayne, NC, and five children: Ann R. Pizzini of Southern Pines; Thomas C. Richardson (Emma) of Columbus, Mississippi; Lawrence E. Richardson (Deborah) of Aberdeen; Patricia R. Klingenschmidt (Stanley) of Pinehurst, and Susan R. McBrayer (Mark) of Aberdeen. She leaves 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren to cherish her memory: Karla Andrews Roberts, Natalie Andrews, Penelope Andrews Shaw; Cameron Richardson Howard (Cader), Thomas B. Richardson; Keith Richardson (Stacey), Eric Richardson (Melissa), Benjamin Richardson (Ashley), and Stuart Richardson (Lindsay); Aaron Klingenschmidt; Michael Klingenschmidt (Kelli); Matthew, Patrick, and Jonathan McBrayer; Will and Kate Roberts; Whitney Gupton; Brooke and Hunter Shaw; Isaac Howard; Landon Richardson; Hailey Klingenschmidt; and Emersyn DeMarco. Memorials may be sent to Manly Presbyterian Church, 546 Yadkin Road, Southern Pines, NC 28387, or the charity of the donor‘s choice.
