MacIntosh, Neil

Dr. Neil B. MacIntosh, 95, professor of political science, emeritus, University of Northern Michigan, died November 4, 2010 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Born in Chicago, he graduated from University of Michigan in forestry, serving in Montana with the U.S. Forest Service and joined the Navy in 1940. Commissioned an ensign, he married high school sweetheart Eloise Jester on March 14, 1941. Destroyer duty in the Atlantic was followed in 1943 by a similar post in the Pacific. His decorations include the Bronze Star with “V” and Presidential Unit Citation. After 1945, he served in various commands, retiring in Pearl Harbor after 24 years of faithful service. At the Univ. of Hawaii he earned two master‘s degrees, followed by a doctorate at the Univ. of Missouri/Columbia. In 1982, after teaching political science for 15 years at Northern Michigan University, Marquette, Michigan, he and wife Eloise moved to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; enjoying retirement and golf until her death in 1996. In 1999, he married Mary Steele, later moving to Pinehurst, North Carolina in 2008. Neil was predeceased by a son, Neil Jr., first wife Eloise and his sister, Norma Lindgren. Survivors include his wife, Mary MacIntosh, sons Craig and Kent of Minneapolis, Minnesota, a stepdaughter and her husband Jan Mullis and Gary of Pinehurst, a stepson Martin Steele of Tulsa, OK, five grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. Interment at Kirk in the Pines, Hot Springs Village, AR will announced at a later date. Memorials to the Boy Scouts of America, Ouchita Region, 102 Chippewa Ct. Hot Springs, AR, 71901 in honor of his Eagle Scout rank and volunteer scoutmaster years.
