Lucinda McKinley Whittington
MRS. LUCINDA MCKINLEY WHITTINGTON was born March 15, 1922 to the late Jessie McKinley and Lucinda Watson McKinley in Dillon County, South Carolina. She was the last one standing of the 18 children from this union. The Lord called Mother Lucinda Whittington home on October 8, 2010. In her formative years, she attended the public schools in Hamer, South Carolina. In 1972, she received her high school diploma from Robeson County Public Schools Adult Education Program. At age 16, she met, fell in love and was united in Holy Matrimony to the handsome Gus Whittington who preceded her in death. To this union were born seven wonderful children. On September 11, 1988 Gus and Lucinda reaffirmed their love and dedication for each other after FIFTY YEARS of marriage. At an early age, Mother Lucinda gave her life to the Lord and joined Hazy Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she remained an active member and served in the capacity as President of Hazy Grove Missionaries and Mother of the Church until her health declined. Her other works and contributions to Hazy Grove Missionary Baptist Church were numerous including: Adult Class Sunday School Teacher, Deaconess, Founder of the Youth Choir, President of the Adult Choir, organizer of Vacation Bible School, and Little PD Association Women‘s Auxiliary; she was a servant and true soldier for the Lord which was exhibited through her works and dedication to the church and mankind. Mother Lucinda was a person with many gifts and talents including but not limited to storyteller, teacher, singer, carpenter, farmer, seamstress, and beautician. She spent many Friday and Saturday nights making women look pretty as she pressed and curled their hair for a dollar a head. Mother Lucinda was a strong advocate of education and demanded that her children always did their very best in school and pursue educational enrichment beyond high school ( all seven children attended four year colleges). Mother Lucinda Whittington leaves to cherish her loving memories, a son, Latha Lagusta Whittington, Raleigh, NC; and daughters, Helen Carolyn Whittington, Maxton, NC; Jacquelyn Whittington, Goldsboro, NC; Paulette Whittington Alston (Alfred), Youngsville, NC; Daffinette Whittington Dudley (Kevin), Wilmington, NC; Cynthia Benita Hammond (Melvin) and Cassandra McKinley Whittington, both of Raleigh, NC and Katina Nicole Whittington, Charlotte, NC; seven grandchildren, April D. Whittington, Tenea Whittington, Whitney D. Adams (Jabarr), Dene‘ McDonald, Nekoda Whittington, Matthew Hammond and Tammy Bethea; five great-grandchildren: Jamison, Tirique, Anthony, Xcipress, and D‘Zhne; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
