Mary Anne L. Bird
Mary Anne L. Bird, 81 of Southern Pines, NC died peacefully on September 28, 2010 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital. A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines on Friday, October 1, 2010 at 10 a.m. Mrs. Bird was born on October 28, 1928 in New Brunswick, New Jersey to the late Dr. E. Leon Loblein and Helen Oram Loblein. She attended The Anabel School and graduated from Kent Place School in Summit, New Jersey. She attended the University of Pennsylvania and was a member of Chi Omega Fraternity. During the Second World War she served over 5,000 hours in the Point Pleasant Hospital as a nurse‘s aide. She moved to Maplewood when she was married and became a home maker. She continued to be an active hospital volunteer and served on the Auxiliary Board of Orange Memorial Hospital for many years. She was active in the local and state Young Republicans and served in many positions at St. George‘s Episcopal Church. Mrs. Bird and her husband Bob moved to Seven Lakes in 1988 and then to Belle Meade in 2001. After moving to North Carolina she became active at Emmanuel Episcopal Church serving on the vestry, the Altar Guild, as a Stephen Minister, a member of the Order of The Daughters of the King, and a Caregiver. She was an officer of the League of Women Voters of Moore County, a member of the Southern Pines Civic Association and the Sandhills Club. She loved to play bridge. Mrs. Bird was predeceased by a brother Eldon Loblein, a sister Janet Williamson and a sister Margaret Lucius. She is survived by her husband Robert E. Bird, two daughters, Carroll Schweikert of Key West, Florida, and Wendy Wiley and her husband Jeff of Northport, Maine. 3 sons, Kenneth and his wife Wendy of Blue Hill, Maine; Richard and his wife Lauren, of Searsport, Maine; and David and his wife Alexa of Swanville, Maine, 3 Grandsons; Gram Schweikert, Evan Schweikert and Robert Wiley and 6 granddaughters; Sierra Dietz, Rebecca Greenleaf, Erica Schweikert, Katrina Schweikert, Kaitlyn Schweikert and Emily Wiley and 3 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Altar Guild of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 340 S. Ridge St., Southern Pines, NC 28387 or to Sandhills Community College, 3395 Airport Rd., Pinehurst, NC 28374. Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines is serving the family.
