Marguerite McManus 85 of Whispering Pines passed peacefully at home on Tuesday September 28, 2010; Mrs. McManus was born December 1, 1924 in Middlesex County, MA to the late Edward Norton Clark and Ruth Scates Clark. A memorial service will be held 2PM on Monday October 4th, 2010 at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines. Marguerite, known to her friends as “Peggy”, was born in Massachusetts and raised in Westport, Maine with periods in Orlando, Florida. Gifted athletically, she grew up loving the sports of skiing, swimming and horse back riding. She attended LaSalle College and Tufts University where she majored in Biology, graduating in 1947. After college, she moved to West Philadelphia and worked for J. B. Lippencott Publishing Company. Later, she moved to Wayne, Pennsylvania where she owned and operated a children‘s clothing store known as “The Three Kittens”. While in Wayne, a friend introduced her to the game of golf, and it became a consuming passion. During those golfing years, she met another accomplished amateur golfer by the name of John Thomas “Jack” McManus, her future husband. They married in 1965, and in 1970 after Jack retired from Atlantic Richfield Oil Company, the couple moved to Whispering Pines. They soon became members of Whispering Pines Golf Club, the Piney Pipers and Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church where Peggy was a faithful choir member for many years. She was also a member of The Choral Society and was well known for being a long time volunteer with many local organizations including Moore Regional Hospital, Moore County Arts Council, Humane Society of Moore County and the American Red Cross. Peggy is survived by her many cousins and extended family members. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack McManus in 1996. Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines is serving the family.
