Article by Bob Cristina, band member 843-457-9288
Community interest article about the “Winter Notes” band of Windjammer Village, Little River.
“Older musicians” having fun.
Three years ago, I decided to explore the feasibility of starting a band in the Village. The band would play at the village club house during the months of October through April, thus the name “Winter Notes”. I knew that there had to be some “old time musicians” in the Village. I figured that they may have retired a musical instrument to storage somewhere. These musical instruments, without a good reason for being revived, would most likely stay in storage and collect dust. I also thought that there must be tucked away voices, now being used only to communicate rather than to sing as they use to for others to hear and enjoy. I put a notice on the club house bulletin board and in the WJV newsletter recruiting band members. The result was four members of our current band and an additional three more in the years that followed. A band was put together that plays a variety of music including Pop, Rock and Roll, Country, etc. It was decided that the band would play at the Village clubhouse one night per month, sometimes two. The original band members were myself, Bob Cristina on the keyboard and vocals and Jim Mooshian on the drums and vocals. Next to join us with enthusiasm was Donald Vitelli (now nick named “Swamp Fox”) Singing Country hits and playing guitar. While visiting the front office one day and talking about the band, Angela Marcotte, (currently our board secretary) pointed out to me that Rosy King, who also worked in the office part time with Angela, had a terrific voice. I contacted Rosy and she became part of our band. During one of our events, I was approached by Jeanette Tripp. Jeanette told me that she had a steel guitar that belonged to her dad. She intended to learn how to play it and join our band. She did. Hearing her play now is something special. This year, Kathy Giambrone joined us with her vocals and her husband, Bobby bought a bass guitar, learned to play it and has added the bottom notes that we needed.
Most of the members are retired and all live in the Village. All have other interests and are very busy working with various churches and community organizations. Yet, they find time to get together to enjoy playing music with their fellow musicians and learn new songs for the listening and dancing enjoyment of their neighbors and friends. We are not professionals but we do try hard to get it “as close as possible”. We could be sitting in our “rockers” on the back porch but instead we chose to BE ROCKERS and play that old time Rock and Roll music for our guests. The band will play at the Windjammer village clubhouse on Fri night, March 9th at 7.00 pm.

WORTH NOTING: The band would entertain a request to play for free at a CHARITABLE FUND RAISING EVENT SHOULD THERE BE A REQUEST. Contact winternotesband@hotmail.com for consideration.

These are some of the members of the middle school chorus from Palmetto Academy of Learning and Success (P.A.L.S), a new charter school that opened up this year. The members of this group are 5th and 6th grade girls who love to sing and were hoping to help out our music program here at P.A.L.S. through this competition. The group had not met together very often, about four times, before hearing about the "Search for Christmas Glee" and had less than a week to pull this particular song together. They may not be perfect, but their angelic faces shine with the spirit of giving, the spirit of Christmas.

Devin Townsend, a man of many talents (though mostly musical), has accomplished much that would belie hie age. His career got off the ground in the early '90s, at the age of 19, when he was hired as the vocalist for guitar virtuoso Steve Vai's new project at the time.

Since then, he has had numerous side projects, guest appearances, producer credits, and heaps of original music he has created under various monikers. His latest project, aptly named the Devin Townsend Project, is a work consisting of four albums of varying degrees of musical bombast, but all of which promise to be intense both lyrically and sonically. To date, the albums "Ki" and "Addicted" have been released, and the follow-ups "Deconstruction" and "Ghost" should see the light of day by the end of 2010 or soon after.

The original intent was to release all of the albums and possibly tour after, but "Addicted," released in November 2009, was so fun and such a success for Townsend, that a small winter tour seemed to be in order.

Thus he appeared at Music Farm in Charleston, SC, on February 4, as an opening act for Between The Buried and Me, taking the stage after Scale The Summit, and before metal legends Cynic.

A short set, but electrifying, the 30 minute showcase packed material from Devin's earlier solo albums such as "Physicist" into an evening that also highlighted music from Addicted and his 2007 self-made tongue-in-cheek concept album, "Ziltoid The Omniscient."

Townsend will embark on the next leg of his Winter/Spring tour in March, with the possibility of more touring later this year in support of the last two albums of the Project.
